How do you define style?
Being dressed but not overdressed, it’s about knowing what suits you and not being a slave to the latest fashion fads.
Do you have any rules when it comes to the way you dress? If yes, what are they?
My only rule is “keep it simple”.
Do you believe in role models?
Not really, but I do admire the way the artist David Hockney puts his clothes together, and I have always thought that the author Ian Fleming dressed far better than his character, James Bond.
What are your favourite fabrics?
As an Englishman, tweed and grey flannel are my favourite materials.
Are there any combinations that you do not feel comfortable in trying?
I hate black suits except dinner jackets. Hackett is a navy blue brand. Oh and I never wear T-shirts.
If there is one article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to, then it has to be...
His shoes. So many men ruin a good suit by wearing cheap shoes.
If we could generalise it, then which city has the best dressed men?
Well it could be Athens, but I have yet to visit it. I have just returned from Tokyo, where I saw some incredibly well turned out guys. But probably, I would have to say Paris.
The most essential things a man should have in mind about style are...
Buy the best you can afford. It is better to have one good suit than three mediocre ones.
What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Not dressing your age. It's okay for your grandson to dress like his grandfather but not the other way around.
What is the first thing you notice on a man?
Shoes and badly tied ties.
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
Boldly conservative.
One garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
Hackett navy blue blazers in wool, cashmere, cotton or linen. It is one of the most useful garments in any man's wardrobe; it can be dressed up or down. It is the equivalent for men of the little black dress.
A man should always look like...
He has dressed effortlessly.
The best words of advice you have ever heard?
Dress for yourself not others. Hang on a minute. I think that’s my own advice.
