The one image that defined your approach to style...
The Thom Browne show at Pitti Uomo where the models all sat at rows of desks. The structure, symmetry, and attention to detail blew my mind.
Please describe your style in three words.
Colourful, classic, sophisticated.
What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Overthinking it!
Do you believe in role models?
Definitely. From style to politics to cooking to design, there are people I look to for guidance.
What are your favourite fabrics?
Sometimes I think I should’ve been born in the South — I love seersucker.
Are there any style combinations that you object to?
Given my answer to the next question, not really. I love to see how people mix and match and pull it all together.
Which city has the best-dressed men?
I am definitely partial to Tokyo.
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
I’ve never met a print I didn’t like… so, bold.
What are the rules, if any, in the way you dress?
Not being afraid to try something new. But if I do, make sure to 'own it' once I leave the house.
One garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
A good bag… since moving to New York I seem to be on a collecting binge. Current favourite: WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie.
A man should always look like...
His clothes did not come right from the laundry bin.
Who taught you what you know about style?
Less a ‘who’ than a ‘what’ — I’ve been able to travel around the world, and that immersion into culture and design really informed my style.
How do you select your clothing every morning?
Not as carefully as I probably should. But grabbing things blindly has also led to some fun fashion mash-ups!
The three essential things a man should know about style are...
Know your actual size, it’s okay to have a favourite colour and stick with it — and please tuck in your shirt.
Do you have any shopping rituals?
I tend to buy spontaneously but very rarely return anything.
We will never see you wearing...
Never say never… I may don Thom Browne on a regular basis, but also have my eye on some Rick Owens and Givenchy. I’m open to mixing it up.
The most stylish person you have ever seen...
I’d have to say it’s a tie between Hamish Bowles and Nick Wooster. Both have incredible style and a distinct look.
What is the first thing you notice on a man?
His shoes.
Which new designers do you follow and why?
Tim Coppens presented an incredible collection for fall. He has a real sport/technical background from Adidas Slvr and RLX and has applied it in an amazing way. I already know exactly the jacket I’ll be picking up when it hits stores.
What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?
My Patrik Ervell navy shawl collar tuxedo. Best purchase I’ve ever made.
Is comfort an enemy of style?
I don’t think so. My favourite pairs of shoes are also my most comfortable.
Which designer never fails to impress you?
Basty! I’ve been a fan of Michael Bastian’s for so long and each season he gets better and better.
Who would you like to see next in My Style?
Los Angeles-based entertainment/design/antique/art guru John Gray. A man whose style I’ve long tried to emulate.
The best words of advice you have ever heard?
My mentor always posed the question “what is it you want to do?” Really knowing that, and going after it is the best advice I’ve received.
