Which city has the best-dressed men?
Milan, by far! The men are dressed better than the women — such a rarity there days, but refreshing. No man wears a suit better than in this city!
Please describe your style in three words.
Effortless, always pressed, classic.
What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Thinking too much and being matchy-matchy. Dare to be different is a good motto!
Do you believe in role models?
Yes! People influence us daily and fashion is one of those things that can make us feel different and transform us. Some people that I love in terms of style are: my mother, Elizabeth Taylor, Daniel Craig, Olivia Palermo, and Kate Lanphear.
What are your favourite fabrics?
Nothing is sexier than a crisp white cotton button down shirt from Hamilton 1883, a pique polo from Lacoste and cashmere scarves from Brunello Cucinelli.
Are there any style combinations that you object to?
Too matchy-matchy makes me cringe!
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
Deep inside I strive to be bold, but I tend to be more conservative and classic when dressing.
What are the rules, if any, in the way you dress?
Dress for success, feel what you are wearing and own the look!
Celebrities and style...
Some celebrities have great style, while others need to embrace what fashion can do for you — i.e. best-dressed on the red carpet.
One garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
A.P.C New Cure jeans and classic Omega Speedmaster watches.
A man should always look like...
A man! As simple as that.
Who taught you what you know about style?
My mother, from a very, very early age.
How do you select your clothing every morning?
I'm a Gemini and crazy, so I try to plan my outfits/looks daily the night before. At times I've planned looks for a week and fully style out/prep before a big shoot.
What is your biggest regret?
That some men don't experiment enough with fashion.
The three essential things a man should know about style are...
Invest in key, 'essential' pieces. Always have shoe polish and lint roller on hand. Keep your fragrance available in at least two locations, whether it be work and home or home and work.
Do you have any shopping rituals?
As much as I hate to say this, I love shopping online. As a stylist and editor, I see clothes, shoes, and accessories all day, and online shopping offers some added joy.
The most stylish person you have ever seen...
Jake Gyllenhaal and Julianne Moore.
What is the first thing you notice on a man?
His scent. Smell is one of those things that resonate and makes you remember a person, place, and a situation.
The one image that defined your approach to style...
James Dean in 'Rebel Without A Cause.'
Which new designers do you follow and why?
One of my new favourite womenswear designers to date is Arzu Kaprol from Istanbul. She and I have recently become good friends over the last two years, and I admire her understated elegance and sexiness that her collections exude. Another is footwear designer Louis Leeman. His men's collection screams luxury and mini creations of art.
The only article of clothing that a man needs to pay close attention to is...
His dress shirt! Make sure it's nicely pressed with light starch and that the collar has structure. To save money and a cleaner look, get your shirts laundered with light starch instead of dry-cleaning! You will cut your dry-cleaning bill in half!
What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?
My collection of Omega watches. Forever classics! Also, my initial necklaces from Helen Ficalora and Phoenix Roze, and my layered bracelets on my right wrist.
Is comfort an enemy of style?
One must always suffer to look good! That's the fun and joy of this all! Comfort is for the home and lounging around.
Which designer never fails to impress you?
Dolce & Gabbana — clothes that make you feel sexy! DSquared2 — clothes that make you masculine and fun for a night out. Lanvin — the women's collection just makes you want to be a woman!
Who would you like to see next in My Style?
Younger and emerging talent.
The best words of advice you have ever heard?
Be yourself! Wear your clothes and don’t have the clothes wear you.
