What is the biggest mistake one can make when getting dressed?
Being uncomfortable or trying to look like someone else. You are unique.
Please describe your style in three words.
Timeless, comfortable and luxurious quiet elegance.
Do you believe in role models?
When I was younger I did not. Recently I started to—I love looking at beauty and of course lots of women are very inspirational.
What are your favourite fabrics?
Cashmere, jersey, and silk.
Are there any style combinations that you object to?
Yes, I do. I really object to something that is obviously trying hard, like the piling up of all the “in” things during any particular fashion season. It’s becoming quite tedious and too predictable.
Which city has the best-dressed women?
I really love a certain type of Roman woman—I find their elegance intriguing. I think elegance, apart from the obvious external aspect of clothing, comes primarily from the mind.
Would you say that you are conservative or bold?
I am mentally quite bold so I guess I try to tame myself in the clothes I choose to wear.
What are the rules in the way you dress?
No rules—but I would not want the clothes to speak louder than me. I also enter the role or the mood that I am feeling that day.
Celebrities and style...
Are an interesting circus.
Name one garment/accessory that you can never have enough of?
Probably shoes.
A woman should always look like...
She is in love.
Who taught you what you know about style?
I think it’s a learning curve. You just get to know yourself throughout the years and you start to objectively look at yourself in the mirror.
How do you select your clothing every morning?
It’s a very fast ritual.
What is your biggest regret?
Hmmmm…what’s happened cannot be undone but it served as a valuable lesson!
The three essential things a woman should know about style are...
I do not consider myself an expert, but I think style is a way of living which translates into everything we do, wear, express.
Do you have any shopping rituals?
Impulsiveness is the key word here. But it's always the new versions of the same item of clothing, i.e., a white shirt, high-waisted trousers, the statement coat, etc.
We will never see you wearing...
I don't know. I never say never because that would make it very interesting to wear.
Which new designers do you follow and why?
I really love Edgardo Osorio of Aquazzura, Paul Andrew shoes, Blazè Milano, Delpozo from Spain, Maticevski from Australia and Jonathan Simkhai from New York. I love looking out for the new kids on the block!
What is the first thing you notice on a woman?
Her eyes. They are the windows to the soul.
What are the most treasured items in your wardrobe?
A black Christian Dior tuxedo blazer.
The one image that defined your approach to style...
My parents were very active in the 70s in Rome and especially in Paris. In the 80s I discovered Helmut Newton’s photographs—I might have been five years old. I used to absorb his books in my parents' library at a tender age. Not sure if it was the Le Smoking picture or portraits of Catherine Deneuve or Charlotte Rampling, but it left a strong visual memory.
Which fashion house never fails to impress you?
So many… the freshest memory I have is of the Valentino Haute Couture show in Paris and it was just an incredible showcase of workmanship.
One article of clothing that a woman needs to pay close attention to is...
It really depends on what you are into. I like to pay attention to my lingerie. And my skin. I guess you can classify that into clothing right?
Is comfort an enemy of style?
Not in my case. If one is comfortable in what one is wearing it gives a harmony to one’s appearance. You embody the clothes instead of them just being "imposed" on you. I define comfort through good materials, a good fit and perhaps a mental fit.
